About PassDeutsch

What is PassDeutsch?

PassDeutsch is a German exam preparation app for the Goethe-Zertifikat, telc Deutsch and the DTZ at A1, A2 and B1. It gives you full-length model tests with real exam timing, AI marking for writing and speaking, vocabulary and grammar training, and analytics that show which module needs work. It is available free on iOS and Android.

Which German exams does PassDeutsch cover?

Three providers: Goethe-Institut (Goethe-Zertifikat A1, A2 and B1), telc Deutsch (A1, A2 and B1, including the Sprachbausteine section at B1) and the DTZ (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer), which is certified on the A2/B1 scale.

Is PassDeutsch suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. Start at A1: the vocabulary trainer and grammar lessons cover the level from the beginning, and the model tests show you the exam format long before you need to sit it. If you have never studied German at all, work through the A1 vocabulary and grammar first and use tests as a monthly checkpoint.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone and iPad via the App Store, and Android phones and tablets via Google Play.

Is PassDeutsch affiliated with the Goethe-Institut, telc or BAMF?

No. PassDeutsch is an independent study tool published by ShawonPro and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any examination body. All practice material is original content written to the published exam specifications.

Exams and levels

Which exam should I take - Goethe, telc or DTZ?

Take the exam the institution asking for the certificate accepts. Integration course participants take the DTZ. For visas, university applications and international recognition, the Goethe-Zertifikat travels furthest. telc is very widely used inside Germany and by employers and language schools. All three certify the same CEFR levels; only the format differs.

What level do I need?

A1 is the level normally required for a spouse or family reunification visa. A2 is often a course milestone. B1 is what permanent residence and naturalisation applications usually ask for, and what many employers and apprenticeships expect. Confirm the requirement with the office handling your case.

How do I know if I am ready to book the exam?

Sit two or three complete model tests under exam conditions. If your scores are stable, comfortably above the pass mark, and no single module is far behind the others, book. If one module keeps dragging, fix that module first - a certificate is decided by your weakest skill.

Can I retake just one module?

At Goethe-Zertifikat B1, yes: the exam is modular and each of the four modules is certified separately. telc and the DTZ are taken as a whole exam.

What score do I need to pass?

Around 60% is the usual pass mark for Goethe and telc exams. The DTZ works differently: it is a scaled test and your certificate shows A2 or B1 for the written and the oral part. Check the current rules with your test centre when booking.

Practice and feedback

How does the AI feedback work?

After you submit a writing task or record a speaking answer, the app evaluates it against the criteria examiners use - task fulfilment, structure, register, grammar and vocabulary - and returns a score with specific feedback points: what you did well and exactly what cost you marks. It is instant and available at any hour.

Are the model tests real exam papers?

No. Official papers are the copyright of the exam boards. PassDeutsch tests are original material built to the same specification: the same modules, part counts, task types, timings and difficulty level.

Can I practise speaking without a partner?

Yes. There are guided conversation lessons of about five minutes each, plus exam-format recording tasks for every part of the Sprechen test, with a scored evaluation afterwards. It does not replace practising with a person, but it means the daily work no longer depends on finding one.

Can I write my answers by hand?

Yes - photograph your handwritten answer and the app reads and marks it. Since the exam itself is handwritten, that is the closest practice you can get.

Does it work offline?

Downloaded practice content works without a connection. AI marking for writing and speaking needs internet, because the evaluation runs on our servers.

Languages

What languages is PassDeutsch available in?

Thirteen: English, Deutsch, Türkçe, বাংলা (Bengali), العربية (Arabic), Українська (Ukrainian), Русский (Russian), हिन्दी (Hindi), اردو (Urdu), Español, Português, Română and Polski. The interface, instructions, grammar explanations and vocabulary definitions are all translated.

Why does the app language matter for exam preparation?

Because misreading an instruction costs the same points as not knowing the German. Studying with instructions in a language you are fluent in means your attention goes to the exam text rather than to the exercise wrapper - especially at A1 and A2.

Can I change the language later?

Yes, at any time in Settings. Your progress is unaffected.

Account and privacy

Is PassDeutsch free to use?
