telc Deutsch A2 model test

telc A2 is the level a lot of integration-course learners meet first, and the jump from A1 is mostly one of volume and speed. A complete model test in one sitting is the only reliable way to find out whether you can finish in the time the exam actually allows.

Before you start

What catches people out at telc A2

The things that cost marks here are rarely the German itself.

The oral exam is taken in pairs

You are examined with another candidate, and part of the mark is interaction: responding to what they say rather than delivering a prepared monologue.

Content points are the marking scheme

The writing task lists what your message must mention. Cover every point in plain, correct German and you score better than an ambitious answer that omits one.

Print it, do not read it on screen

The real A2 exam is on paper and handwritten. Reading a PDF on a phone while looking things up is a different task entirely, and it flatters your score.

Run the clock from the first page

Set a timer per module and stop when it stops, even mid-sentence. Almost everyone who fails a module fails it on pacing rather than knowledge.

After you have sat it

Score it honestly, then work on the weakest module rather than the whole exam. A certificate is decided by your worst skill, not your average.

FAQ

telc A2 questions

How long is the telc A2 exam?

Roughly 90 minutes of written modules taken in one block, plus about 15 minutes for the oral exam, normally in pairs and often on the same day.

What is the difference between telc A2 and the DTZ?

The DTZ is the exam at the end of the state integration course and is scored on an A2/B1 scale, so one paper can certify either level. telc A2 certifies A2 only.

Do I need a course before taking telc A2?

No, telc exams are open to external candidates. Many centres charge external candidates more than their own course participants, so it is worth comparing before booking.
