Online-only registration at the VHS
The Hamburger Volkshochschule takes exam bookings through its website rather than at a counter. Set up the account before the date you want opens, because popular sittings fill quickly once they appear.
Hamburg · 1.9 million
Hamburg has both a Goethe-Institut and a large Volkshochschule licensed by telc and Goethe, plus four private centres, so almost every exam format is available somewhere in the city. Registration is where they differ: the VHS takes bookings online only, Germania wants four weeks’ notice, and the Goethe-Institut opens some dates to external candidates and not others.
Where to sit the exam
Each entry was checked on the centre's own website. Dates and fees change, so confirm directly with the centre before you pay.

Booking in this city
The Hamburger Volkshochschule takes exam bookings through its website rather than at a counter. Set up the account before the date you want opens, because popular sittings fill quickly once they appear.
The VHS is licensed by both telc and the Goethe-Institut, so you can sit a telc exam at A1 to C1 and a Goethe-Zertifikat C2 at the same institution. Which certificate you need depends on who is asking for it, not on which is nearer.
The Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer is tied to the integration course system rather than open booking. If you are in a course, your provider schedules it; if you are a self-payer, ask an approved course provider directly.
The VHS answers exam questions in limited windows during the week. A phone call inside those hours resolves registration problems far faster than email.
DeutschAkademie examines every week and speakeasy several times a week. If a deadline is close, private sittings beat waiting for the next VHS date - at a higher fee.
Germania Akademie charges €190 at B1 against €219 at DeutschAkademie and €239 at speakeasy. Germania is the cheapest but examines only every couple of months and wants four weeks’ notice - the classic trade of price against flexibility.
speakeasy includes a preparation course with every registration, with live question sessions. Worth factoring in before comparing on headline fee alone.
Booking is the easy half. Sit a full model test in the format you booked - Goethe, telc or DTZ - and let the analytics tell you which module needs the weeks between now and your date.
FAQ
At the Hamburger Volkshochschule, which is a telc licensee and runs telc Deutsch exams from A1 to C1. Registration is online only.
Yes. The Goethe-Institut Hamburg accepts external candidates with the required level, although not at every date in the calendar.
Through an approved integration course provider. The DTZ is not booked like an ordinary telc exam - course participants are entered by their provider, and self-payers should contact an approved centre directly.
The exam boards maintain their own centre finders. They are the authoritative list.
