German exam centres in The United Kingdom

The UK has a small but clear German exam network. The Goethe-Institut examines A1 to C2 in London and Glasgow, and telc adds two independent centres. A common reason for booking here is a German spouse or family visa, where the A1 certificate is the usual requirement - and the Goethe-Institut confirms that A1 and every higher level are accepted for it.

What is different about The United Kingdom

A1 is the family visa level

For a German spouse or family reunion visa the requirement is normally A1. The Goethe-Institut confirms that the A1 certificate and every higher level from A2 to C2 are accepted for it, so a stronger certificate you already hold will do.

Only two Goethe cities

London and Glasgow are the only Goethe exam locations in the UK. From Manchester, Cardiff or Belfast that means travel and probably an overnight stay, which belongs in the cost of the exam.

Goethe UK does not advertise TestDaF

Its exam pages cover the Goethe-Zertifikat range only. If a German university has named TestDaF, check the TestDaF portal for a UK venue rather than assuming the institute runs it.

telc is a real alternative outside London

The German Academy in Leicestershire examines telc, which is recognised alongside Goethe for most purposes. For a visa file, confirm with the mission first - but for many employers it is interchangeable.

Booked a date? Now get the score.

Sitting the exam abroad usually means one shot and a long wait for the next date. Practise in the real format first - Goethe, telc or DTZ - and let the analytics show which module still needs the weeks you have left.

FAQ

Taking a German exam in The United Kingdom

Which German exam do I need for a spouse visa?

Normally A1. The Goethe-Institut states that the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 and all higher certificates from A2 to C2 are recognised for the purpose, so an existing stronger certificate should be accepted. Confirm with the German mission handling your file before you book.
