German exam centres in Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe splits along a clear line: the Volkshochschule is the Goethe and citizenship-test centre, while the telc exams and the DTZ run at private academies. There is no Goethe-Institut in the city, but the vhs is licensed to examine Goethe up to C1, which covers most needs.

What is different about Karlsruhe

Goethe without a Goethe-Institut

Karlsruhe has no Goethe-Institut, but the vhs is licensed to run Goethe-Zertifikat exams from A1 to C1. For most visa, residence and citizenship purposes that is exactly the certificate people are asked for.

Two institutions, two exam families

Goethe and the Einbürgerungstest at the vhs; telc, the DTZ and the vocational German test at the Sprachakademie. Going to the wrong one costs you an email round trip.

Karlsruhe is not a cheap city for exams

The Sprachakademie publishes €150 at A1, €220 at B1 and €250 at B2 and C1, with the DTZ at €220. Compare with €130 for the DTZ in Duisburg or €105 for A1 in Nürnberg - if you are flexible about where you sit, the difference is substantial.

Dates published well ahead

The Sprachakademie lists sittings months in advance, which makes it easy to work backwards from a permit deadline. It also warns that dates can occasionally shift for organisational reasons.

Stuttgart and Mannheim are close

If Karlsruhe has no date in your window, Stuttgart is an hour away with three verified centres and Mannheim about 45 minutes, with one of the largest telc operations in Baden-Württemberg.
