German exam centres in Austria

Austria is a German-speaking country, so the exam landscape here is not the Goethe network you find elsewhere. Three things run in parallel: telc, licensed through private language schools in six cities; ÖSD, the Austrian diploma, through its own authorised centres; and the ÖIF Integrationsprüfung, which is the exam the residence and citizenship rules actually name. Picking the wrong one is the most expensive mistake on this page.

What is different about Austria

The ÖIF exam is the one the residence rules name

For a residence permit or citizenship in Austria, the requirement is usually the ÖIF Integrationsprüfung at A2, B1 or B2 - a combined language and values test. A telc or ÖSD certificate at the same level is not automatically a substitute. Check what your specific application asks for before you pay for anything.

The Österreich Institut cannot examine you here

This surprises people: the Österreich Institut states that its ÖSD examination programme is aimed exclusively at candidates located outside Austria. If you are in Austria and want ÖSD, you go to an authorised ÖSD centre directly, not to them.

No Goethe exam network in Austria

The Goethe-Institut runs its exam centres abroad rather than in German-speaking countries. If you need a Goethe-Zertifikat specifically - because a German employer asked for one by name - you will normally be sitting it outside Austria.

Vienna has the choice, the regions have one option

Five of the verified telc centres are in Vienna. Graz, Salzburg, Linz, Innsbruck and Lienz have one each, so a full calendar there means travelling rather than waiting for the next local date.

Booked a date? Now get the score.

Sitting the exam abroad usually means one shot and a long wait for the next date. Practise in the real format first - Goethe, telc or DTZ - and let the analytics show which module still needs the weeks you have left.

FAQ

Taking a German exam in Austria

Which German exam do I need for a residence permit in Austria?

Usually the ÖIF Integrationsprüfung at A2, B1 or B2, which combines language with a values and orientation component. It is not the same as a telc or ÖSD certificate at that level, and one does not automatically replace the other. Confirm the exact requirement with the authority handling your application before booking.

Where can I take a telc exam in Austria?

In Vienna at DeutschAkademie, Loqui, Die Sprachschule KSW, the Wiener Institut für Sprachen und Nachhilfe and EURASYA; in Graz at sprache & kultur; in Salzburg at inlingua; in Linz at BFI Oberösterreich; in Innsbruck at inlingua; and in Lienz at DeutschKreativ.

Can I take the ÖSD exam in Austria?

Yes, but not through the Österreich Institut - it states that its ÖSD programme is only for candidates outside Austria. You register with an authorised ÖSD exam centre instead. ÖSD lists over 200 centres in Austria, so use its official centre finder to find the nearest.

Can I sit a Goethe-Zertifikat in Austria?

Not through a Goethe-Institut network, because the Goethe-Institut operates its exam centres outside the German-speaking countries. If a German employer or authority has asked for a Goethe certificate by name, ask whether telc or ÖSD at the same level is acceptable before you plan travel.
