German exam centres in China

China has the widest German exam coverage in Asia. The Goethe-Institut examines in Beijing and works through partner centres in nine more cities, from Shanghai and Guangzhou to Shenyang and Xi’an. University admission drives most of the demand, which pushes candidates towards TestDaF and C1 rather than the lower levels that dominate elsewhere.

What is different about China

Ten cities, one published address

Beijing is the only location the institute publishes an address for. The other nine are partner centres, so contact Beijing for the venue and calendar rather than searching for a local office that may not take walk-ins.

Beijing has two addresses - use the right one

Language courses and exams run from the Cyber Tower in Haidian; the culture and information office is in the 798 Art District in Chaoyang, on the other side of the city. Arriving at the wrong one costs you the exam.

Study files mean TestDaF or C1

German universities teaching in German normally ask for TestDaF or Goethe-Zertifikat C1, and Chinese applicants make up one of the largest groups. They are different exams in format and scoring - read the admission letter rather than assuming.

APS applies before the language exam

Chinese applicants to German universities usually also need APS certification of their academic documents, which is separate from any language certificate. Sort out which you need first, because the timelines differ.

Booked a date? Now get the score.

Sitting the exam abroad usually means one shot and a long wait for the next date. Practise in the real format first - Goethe, telc or DTZ - and let the analytics show which module still needs the weeks you have left.

FAQ

Taking a German exam in China

Where can I take a German exam in China?

At the Goethe-Institut in Beijing, in the Cyber Tower in Haidian, and through partner exam centres in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Xi’an, Nanjing, Qingdao, Tianjin, Shenyang and Chongqing.

What is the address of the Shanghai or Guangzhou exam centre?

The institute does not publish addresses for its partner centres - only for Beijing. Contact Goethe-Institut China for the venue and the current calendar in your city before booking travel.

Which Beijing address is the exam at?

The Cyber Tower, Building B, 17th floor, No. 2 Zhong Guan Cun South Ave in Haidian - the language and exam address. The institute’s culture and information office in the 798 Art District in Chaoyang is a different place entirely.

Is there a telc or ÖSD exam centre in China?

We checked telc’s own centre register and it lists none, and ÖSD publishes no register we can read. Treat that as "none found" rather than "none exists", and ask any school claiming to examine either board for its centre number.

The exam boards maintain their own centre finders. They are the authoritative list.
