German exam centres in Kenya

Kenya has become one of the larger African sources of Ausbildung and nursing candidates for Germany, and the Goethe-Institut in Nairobi is the exam centre that carries it. It covers A1 to C2, TestDaF for university admission and the Goethe-Test PRO for the workplace.

The institute also runs German courses in Mombasa, held at the Alliance Française next to the Busy Bee School, but it publishes no exam venue there - assume exams mean Nairobi unless the institute tells you otherwise.

We do not publish individual sitting dates: they change too often to be safe. Follow the centre link for the current calendar.

What is different about Kenya

Courses in Mombasa, exams in Nairobi

The institute teaches in Mombasa at the Alliance Française, but we could not verify an exam venue there. Studying on the coast does not mean sitting on the coast - confirm with the institute before you plan the week.

B1 is the Ausbildung level

Vocational training contracts in Germany typically ask for B1, and nursing recognition for B2. Both are examined in Nairobi, so the constraint is dates rather than levels.

TestDaF is booked centrally

Nairobi offers TestDaF, but you register on testdaf.de rather than with the institute, on six fixed dates a year with places allocated in the order registrations arrive.

Get the requirement in writing

Agencies recruiting for German employers sometimes name a certificate the recognition authority does not actually require, or the reverse. Ask the authority or employer directly and keep the answer before you pay for a sitting.

Booked a date? Now get the score.

Sitting the exam abroad usually means one shot and a long wait for the next date. Practise in the real format first - Goethe, telc or DTZ - and let the analytics show which module still needs the weeks you have left.

FAQ

Taking a German exam in Kenya

Where can I take a German exam in Kenya?

At the Goethe-Institut Nairobi, in Maendeleo House on Monrovia Street. It examines the full Goethe-Zertifikat range from A1 to C2, plus TestDaF and the Goethe-Test PRO.

Can I sit a German exam in Mombasa?

Not at any venue we could verify. The Goethe-Institut runs courses in Mombasa at the Alliance Française, next to the Busy Bee School, but publishes no exam location there. Ask the institute directly before assuming a coastal sitting is possible.

Which level do I need for an Ausbildung in Germany?

Usually B1, and B2 for nursing recognition. Both are examined in Nairobi. Confirm with the employer or the recognition authority for the German state you are moving to, since requirements vary by profession.

Is there a telc or ÖSD exam centre in Kenya?

We checked telc’s own centre register and it lists no examination centre in Kenya, and we could not verify one independently. Treat that as “none found” rather than “none exists”: the register lags reality in places - Vietnam has two licensed telc centres that do not appear in it - and ÖSD publishes no register we can read. If you know of a centre here, send us the link to its exam page and we will check it and add it.
