German exam centres in Australia

Australia has better German exam coverage than its distance from Europe suggests. The Goethe-Institut examines in Sydney and Melbourne, and three partner organisations run exams in Adelaide, Canberra and Perth - so most of the population is within one city of a centre. Study, working-holiday and heritage reasons all feature, and the youth exams run up to B2 here.

What is different about Australia

Five cities, three of them partners

Only Sydney and Melbourne are Goethe-Instituts. Adelaide, Canberra and Perth are run by partner organisations, which means shorter level lists and fewer dates - check before you count on a level being available locally.

Perth saves a very long flight

The Goethe-Society WA is the only verified centre in Western Australia. If it examines the level you need, that is five hours of flying avoided - worth a phone call before booking Melbourne.

Youth exams run to B2

Australia lists youth versions at B1 and B2 as well as the Fit in Deutsch exams at A1 and A2. German is taught in many Australian schools, so check which version a receiving institution wants.

TestDaF only at the two institutes

Sydney and Melbourne list TestDaF for university admission. Booking runs centrally on testdaf.de, and the three partner centres do not offer it.

Booked a date? Now get the score.

Sitting the exam abroad usually means one shot and a long wait for the next date. Practise in the real format first - Goethe, telc or DTZ - and let the analytics show which module still needs the weeks you have left.

FAQ

Taking a German exam in Australia

Where can I take a German exam in Australia?

At the Goethe-Institut in Sydney (90 Ocean Street, Woollahra) or Melbourne (341 George St, Fitzroy), and at partner centres: The German Academy in Adelaide, the ACT German Language School in Canberra and the Goethe-Society WA in Perth.

Can I sit a German exam in Perth?

Yes, at the Goethe-Society WA, the only verified centre in Western Australia. It is a partner centre rather than an institute, so confirm it examines your level before assuming you can avoid the flight east.

Where can I take TestDaF in Australia?

At the Goethe-Instituts in Sydney and Melbourne. Booking runs centrally on testdaf.de rather than through the institute, and the partner centres in Adelaide, Canberra and Perth do not offer it.

Is there a telc or ÖSD exam centre in Australia?

We checked telc’s own centre register and it lists none, and ÖSD publishes no register we can read. Treat that as "none found" rather than "none exists", and ask any school claiming to examine either board for its centre number.
