Asia · 30 verified centres
India has the largest Goethe network in Asia - six Goethe-Instituts, known locally as Max Mueller Bhavan, plus five partner Goethe-Zentren - and it also has a growing set of independent telc and ÖSD centres. All three certificates are accepted by the German missions, so the practical question is usually which board has a seat near you at a price you can pay. This page lists every centre we could verify on its own website, city by city.
Where to sit the exam
Each centre was checked on the exam board's own website. Dates and fees change, so confirm directly with the centre before you pay or travel.

5th Floor, C-56, Avviare Educational Hub, A/20, Sector 62, Noida 201309

Its own site describes the exams as run in collaboration with IIK Düsseldorf rather than under a licence of its own. Ask which centre number your certificate will be issued under before you pay.

Before you book
The six main institutes trade under the name Max Mueller Bhavan in India. It is the same organisation and the same certificate - if a consultant tells you otherwise, they are wrong.
Spouses joining a partner in Germany normally need an A1 certificate - Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1, telc Deutsch A1 or ÖSD Zertifikat A1. It is the single most-booked exam in the country and it runs at almost every centre on this page.
German missions list Goethe, telc, ÖSD and TestDaF among the providers whose certificates they accept, which is why an ÖSD A1 from Chandigarh and a Goethe A1 from Delhi do the same job. The mission handling your file still has the final word, so confirm in writing before you book - especially for a nursing or employment file, where the employer may insist on one specific board.
The same telc level can cost ₹11,500 in Coimbatore and ₹19,900 in Chennai, and the Goethe centres price separately again. If you can travel, comparing two or three centres is worth more than any discount code.
Goethe-Institut India lists TestDaF among its exams, but you cannot register at the institute: booking runs only through the TestDaF website, on six fixed dates a year, and seats in the bigger Indian cities go within days of the window opening. The portal is also the only reliable list of which Indian venues are running a given date.
Fit in Deutsch A1 and A2 are designed for ages 10 to 16. The Goethe-Institut recommends the adult exams from 16, and C2 from 18.
Sitting the exam abroad usually means one shot and a long wait for the next date. Practise in the real format first - Goethe, telc or DTZ - and let the analytics show which module still needs the weeks you have left.
FAQ
Normally an A1 certificate proving basic German for a spouse joining a partner in Germany. Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 is the most common route, but telc Deutsch A1 and ÖSD Zertifikat A1 are also on the missions’ accepted list. Always confirm the requirement in writing with the German mission handling your file before you pay for an exam.
Yes, more than most people expect. telc runs through independent licensed centres rather than a single network, so they are easy to miss. Verified ones include WBS Training in Agra, Lingua Leaps and BSLEU Akademie in Noida, PSG Institute of Advanced Studies in Coimbatore, DeutschPro in Chennai, Edunova in Pune, Tenzing in Kollam, Quadrigo in Bangalore and Kochi, the University of Mumbai German department, and Auxila in Vijayawada, Noida, Chandigarh and Thiruvananthapuram. Note that the University of Mumbai centre has no exams scheduled after 31 July 2026 until further notice.
Yes. ÖSD works through authorised partner centres, and we have verified three: Krislingua in Greater Noida (A1 to C2), Voegel Services India in New Delhi (A1 to B1) and ÖSD Zentrum Chandigarh (A1 to B2). ÖSD is the Austrian certificate and is recognised alongside Goethe and telc.
It depends far more on the centre than on the board. Published telc fees on this page range from ₹11,500 for a digital A1 or A2 in Coimbatore to ₹19,900 for the same levels in Chennai. Several centres publish no exam-only fee at all, so ask for it in writing rather than assuming the course price includes the exam.
TestDaF is booked centrally on testdaf.de, not at the Goethe-Institut counter, and it runs on six fixed dates a year at B2 to C1 level for university admission. The booking portal shows which Indian venues have seats for a given date; because places are limited and allocated in order of registration, treat the portal rather than any third-party list as the answer.
Yes. Goethe-Zentren are official partner centres and issue the same Goethe-Zertifikat. They cover fewer exam types, so check the level you need is offered.
Yes. Candidates needing special arrangements must supply a medical certificate at registration, not on the exam day.
The exam boards maintain their own centre finders. They are the authoritative list.
